Why is it important for everyone to learn and understand disability?

Anyone who has a disability knows the impact it has on their life. This could be a positive experience, but it is likely to be a negative one. Everyone that is disabled experiences some type of challenge to overcome.  Developing confidence is vital to their inclusion in their local community. Every aspect of society has a duty to allow anyone with a disability to live the life they deserve. Everybody is different, whether you have a disability or not, but at the same time, we are all very similar.

Over the last few decades, there has been a drive to address disability and accessibility.  It has a larger prominence and supports everyone to develop empathy to all in their community. Disability awareness helps change the mindset of society, leading to increased opportunities for all.  This will create a positive inclusive society going forward.  It is thought that there are around 150 million people in the world experiencing some type of disability. There is evidence to show this group is more likely to experience discrimination. The main places that discrimination is experienced include education, health, employment, social economy, and justice.

Everybody should have the opportunity to take part in disability awareness. This will see greater education in society and personal development, whilst also allowing an individual to make subtle changes in everything they do. Acceptance by all is fundamental to understanding disability. This type of learning needs to start at a young age, such as in school. Several researchers found that disability awareness programmes in schools are key. It allows children to develop more understanding, empathy, and have a greater acceptance and positive attitude.  This positive attitude stays with a young person as they grow up, to allow for a more inclusive and diverse environment. A positive attitude will also have an impact on people they come into contact with throughout their life.  In today’s digital world, there are many influences that may affect a young person’s learning and attitude. They may see and hear things that are untrue, and which influence their thoughts and attitudes. This is another reason why it is key to have a structured disability awareness programme across education.

compass with the word opportunitiesWith the number of unemployed disabled people growing, but their desire to work increasing, it is important that we also focus on educating employers and businesses. This should include all employees, no matter what their role is. Many disabled people have different but valued skill sets which are not always brought to the attention of an employer.  Understanding disability does not only help you find the right person for a role, but it allows you to develop the business so it is open to all. Most employers will have doubts about employing a disabled person. These can be addressed by understanding the disability or impairment, and the type of support that may be required. It will not necessarily be an added expense but having a greater understanding and knowing how the disability impacts the person, will have a positive outcome for everyone.
