It’s been a speedy start to 2024 for Ability Consultancy, as we continue to challenge the stereotyping surrounding disability. Earlier in February, Claire Buckle had the great pleasure of delivering disability awareness sessions with the Richard Whitehead Foundation for whom she is a trustee, to the employees of Nissan Motor GB.
The Richard Whitehead Foundation
The Richard Whitehead Foundation is a small charity which uses the power of sport for the benefit of disabled people and was founded by Richard Whitehead MBE, an awe inspiring 4 time Paralympian and Gold medallist. Richard says of the charity’s mission that he wants to,
“Ensure people don’t face the same barriers I have and creating opportunities for disabled people is central to everything we do and I believe in.”
This mission is perfectly aligned with Ability Consultancy’s mission to remove barriers for disabled people to live full and fulfilling lives. Sport was a lifeline for our founder, para-athlete Claire Buckle and with our uniquely qualified and experienced approach to disability awareness training, in schools, the community, and in the workplace, Claire jumped at the chance (not literally, she is still recovering from knee troubles related to her cerebral palsy) to support disability awareness training for Nissan Motor GB.
Nissan Motor GB
Nissan Motor GB is a lead charity partner of The Richard Whitehead Foundation and launched Nissan Possibilities Project in 2022 to support young people with leg limb loss, amputation or limb difference to participate in running and other sports. 2024 saw the first of disability awareness sessions for employees at Nissan Motor GB which were designed to be a safe space for people to learn more about different physical and hidden disabilities and to have open discussions about suitable language use and how to support individuals appropriately.
Disability Awareness Training
The training sessions were hugely successful being described as ‘fun and practical’ and this is the consistent feedback we get from all Ability Consultancy training sessions. Claire reflected that,
“Disability awareness is a really important topic as there are many things people don’t always think about. I think we highlighted them with our honest and humorous stories. I had my usual fun of watching people tie hair up with one hand, open a packet of sweets with one hand and try to use a wheelchair”.
Ability Consultancy’s practical in-person sessions are the top tier disability awareness training sessions that we deliver as the physical challenges delegates experience, give a small taste of the day to day challenges many people with disabilities face. However, the theoretical elements of the day have been recently revamped and are based on our full Disability Awareness Training Course which is available online to purchase and work through at your own pace, time, and location, whilst gaining a CPD accreditation.
Online Training Courses
Our other CPD accredited online courses also include ‘Disability in the Workplace’ and ‘Disability in Sport’ and are written from the heart by Claire. They provide open and honest real-life examples (alongside the professional, practical, and legal information) and really get you thinking in a more open way and ensure that legal requirements for the Equality Act 2010 are adhered too.
